Pre- Christmas dinner…

Pre- Christmas dinner…

I decided, as we had an awesome pre-Christmas dinner in 2011, it was time to set-forth the tradition in 2012…  Our group expanded quite a bit since a year ago, with all the new South-Africans coming to Amsterdam and it was tight to fit everyone around my table J  16 people, compared to 10 in the prior year J  All the girls contributed – and we had an awesome  South-African food Christmas dinner!  Bobotie, Chicken pie, rice, pumpkin tart, sweet potatoes, broccoli, salad, bread – it was a feast!  And some yummie cake for desert!  We had some hickups – as I have a microwave for an oven…  The chicken pie did not fit into my microwave oven – and we had to go and ask my next door Dutch neighbour, for some goodwill – the use of his oven J  Luckily, my one friend, Marissa, asked him in Dutch, in a very friendly manner, if he would finish baking the chicken pie for us!  Day saved by my next door neighbour!

With the pumpkin tart we were not that lucky J  We tried heating the tray on my stove (as it did not fit into my microwave), which caused the tray to crack!  We had to scoop out all the pumpkin tart in  smaller trays – what a commotion!   All of the girls learnt that night that, that is now way to heat a tray J  It was still the one of the BEST pumpkin tarts I have ever had! J J  Thanks Eugenie J

I got some nice Christmas hats for everyone, and our table was decorated with bright red and silver!  As our tradition, everyone had a secret Santa to buy a gift for someone else…  There is this very cool computer program where you can set up your whole group, and as soon as the group accepts their invitations, by clicking on an email link, the computer automatically selects the secret santa’s…  You can also tell the computer to set some exclusions – for instance that couples do not get each other – to keep it interesting and fun!  It was really special!  Everyone put in a lot of effort, and the gifts were really special J  Felt like a little home away from home!
